Earthquake engineering experts already there

Professor Michael Pender, Associate Professor Jason Ingham and Associate Professor Charles Clifton from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering were in Christchurch when the earthquake struck.

The trio were in a hotel in Cashel Street in the CBD preparing for a seminar on earthquake building standards when they felt the 6.3 magnitude quake.

They escaped without injury and have stayed on in the city as part of the official building assessment team investigating structural damage.

Others from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department have since joined their colleagues in Christchurch to help with building inspections and to carry out earthquake research.

The department’s earthquake engineering experts have also given interviews to New Zealand and overseas media. You can view and read some of these by visiting the following links.
